While optional, targets and milestones provide a structured way to define the desired conditions for the landscape and evaluate the landscape’s actual status and trends against these objectives. Targets and milestones are valuable for tracking progress through the platform as reassessments are conducted and for demonstrating progress to stakeholders.
If targets and milestones have already been established by landscape stakeholders or other relevant parties, the assessment team can input them and align them with the corresponding metrics validated in Step B.
Targets and milestones can only be set for metrics (not for indicators, goals, or pillars). To enable comparisons between assessment results and targets/milestones, these objectives must use the same units of measurement as the corresponding metric(s) included in the LandScale assessment.
For example, targets and milestones for eliminating deforestation might be defined as follows, using the same units of measure (ha/year) as the relevant LandScale metric (1.1.2.3):
Landscape target: 0 ha/year conversion of forest ecosystem types by 2030.
Milestones toward the target:
By 2025: <250 ha/year conversion of forest ecosystem types.
By 2027: <100 ha/year conversion of forest ecosystem types.
By 2030: 0 ha/yr conversion of forest ecosystem types.
Targets may be set with or without milestones. Furthermore, targets and milestones do not need to be set for every metric; they can focus on metrics that are most relevant to the landscape's goals. However, when establishing targets and milestones, it is advisable to ensure they represent a holistic range of topics across the four pillars of the.
Additionally, including targets and milestones for interrelated issues is recommended. Addressing topics with potential synergies or tradeoffs—such as balancing conservation and development goals—can enhance the utility of the assessment by fostering a more integrated and strategic approach to landscape management.
The LandScale platform can calculate the difference between performance targets and milestones and the corresponding metric results, provided these are expressed in the same units of measurement. This functionality is only available when reassessment values are present alongside the baseline, as the baseline serves as the starting point for tracking progress. For targets and milestones with specified achievement dates, assessment results should be compared to the time-bound measures that align with the same time period as the assessment.
Using the raw calculations generated by the platform, the assessment team can develop narrative descriptions of performance in the assessment report. These narratives should provide context, interpret the results, and highlight progress or gaps relative to the defined targets and milestones.
