Implementation of safeguards

Safeguards are essential for mitigating potential negative social and environmental impacts of a landscape initiative, while promoting positive outcomes for both people and nature. This sub-criterion evaluates whether the initiative has mechanisms in place to identify, address, and monitor risks related to human rights, environmental sustainability, and social equity.

Requirements and validation criteria

To assess whether a landscape initiative has implemented safeguards, LandScale requests specific information via tailored questions. Submitted materials are used to evaluate and validate the extent to which the implementation of safeguards sub-criterion is met.

Validation criteria

Safeguarding plans or policies.

Documentation of safeguarding plans or policies is uploaded, or a description is provided of how safeguards are integrated into the governance process to minimize risks of negative social and environmental impacts. This may include:

  • Risk assessments.

  • Safeguarding plans.

  • Monitoring systems.

  • Grievance mechanisms.

If no safeguards are in place yet, an explanation and details of plans for their development and implementation are provided.

Involvement of relevant marginalized groups.

Optionally, indication of whether marginalized groups (e.g., Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and/or other context-relevant groups) were engaged in the development of safeguards.

Where marginalized groups are indicated to have been engaged in the development of safeguards, supporting evidence is provided (e.g., signed agreements, written correspondence, workshop summaries, meeting notes).

Once validation is complete, the implementation of safeguards sub-criterion on the wheel at the top of the initiative's profile will be filled to reflect the assigned maturity level, with validated information visible throughout the profile unless it is set to private.
